How much is Netflix in Malawi?
Netflix in Malawi costs US$2.99 to US$9.99 a month, depending on the plan (Netflix Malawi). With Malawi’s 17.5% VAT added, that’s roughly US$3.51 to US$11.74.
| Plan | Price (US$/month) | With 17.5% VAT (US$/month) | Approx. in kwacha, with VAT* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2.99 | 3.51 | ~MK6,145 |
| Basic | 3.99 | 4.69 | ~MK8,200 |
| Standard | 7.99 | 9.39 | ~MK16,420 |
| Premium | 9.99 | 11.74 | ~MK20,530 |
Prices per plan as listed for Malawi in September 2026 (Subscriptionland). VAT columns are our own calculation. The kwacha column uses the official rate of about MK1,749 per US$ on 2 October 2026 (Rio Times).
Two things change your kwacha price:
- VAT. Since 15 April 2026, foreign digital services such as Netflix must charge Malawi’s 17.5% VAT (KPMG, VATupdate). Netflix says taxes may be added on top of the plan price, depending on where you live (Netflix).
- The exchange rate. You pay in dollars, so if the kwacha weakens, Netflix costs more in kwacha even when the dollar price stays the same.
Your exact total always appears at Netflix checkout before you confirm.
What payment methods does Netflix accept in Malawi?
Netflix accepts Visa and Mastercard cards (credit, debit, prepaid, and virtual) plus Netflix gift cards. It doesn’t accept cash or Malawian mobile money directly.
| Payment method | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Malawian bank Visa / Mastercard | Yes | Must be enabled for recurring online and international payments |
| Virtual dollar card (Visa / Mastercard) | Yes | Netflix lists virtual cards as accepted |
| Prepaid card | Yes | Only if it carries a Visa/Mastercard/Amex/Discover logo and supports recurring billing |
| Netflix gift card | Yes | Redeem the code on your account page |
| PayPal | Varies | Netflix lists PayPal for some regions. Check your checkout page |
| Airtel Money / TNM Mpamba | No | Not accepted directly |
| Cash | No | Not accepted |
Netflix’s rule is simple: “Your card must be enabled for recurring automatic e-commerce payments” (Netflix Help). That one line explains most failed payments in Malawi.
Method 1: Pay with your Malawian bank card
A Malawian Visa or Mastercard debit card works for Netflix once your bank has switched on online, international, and recurring payments. Some Malawian banks actively promote their Visa debit cards for Netflix.
Before you start, check three things with your bank:
- Online and international payments are switched on. Many cards come with them off. Some banks need a form or an app setting.
- Recurring payments are allowed. Netflix charges you again every month, and some cards block repeat charges.
- Your forex limit has room. Banks cap how much you can spend abroad in a month. Entry-level card limits can be a few hundred dollars equivalent. Premium cards get more.
Steps to add your card:
- Go to netflix.com and sign in, or start signing up.
- Open Account → Membership → Manage payment info. New members see the payment step during sign-up.
- Choose Credit or Debit Card.
- Enter the card number, expiry date, and CVV.
- Type your billing address exactly as your bank has it.
- Approve the OTP or bank prompt, if one appears.
- Confirm. Netflix shows the plan, price, and next billing date.
Good for: people whose bank cards already work online.
Watch out for: limits that drop when the bank is short of dollars, which can cause a renewal to fail without warning.
Method 2: Pay with a Netflix gift card
A Netflix gift card lets you pay without linking a bank card. You redeem the code, and Netflix uses the balance for your monthly bill until it runs out.
Netflix has a Malawi gift card page, netflix.com/mw/gift-cards, with links to online retailers that sell digital (email) gift cards.
How to redeem a Netflix gift card:
- Buy a gift card online. You can often pay for it with Airtel Money or TNM Mpamba through a local reseller.
- Go to netflix.com/redeem.
- Sign in and enter the code.
- The balance goes onto your account and pays each month’s bill.
Gift card rules to know (Netflix gift terms):
- The card’s currency must match the currency your Netflix account is billed in. Malawi accounts are billed in US dollars.
- Gift cards can’t be used on accounts billed through a third party.
- Your balance can’t go over US$500.
- Gift cards can’t be refunded or resold.
Good for: people without a working card, and anyone who wants to budget a few months ahead. Watch out for: reseller markups and fake codes. Buy only from sellers you trust. Your plan won’t renew automatically once the balance runs out, so top up before it does.
Method 3: Pay with a virtual dollar card
A virtual dollar card is a Visa or Mastercard that lives in an app, which you top up and spend in US dollars. It doesn’t draw on your bank’s forex allocation, so it keeps working when your bank card hits its limit.
Netflix lists virtual cards as an accepted payment method (Netflix Help). The card just needs to support recurring payments.
When comparing virtual cards, check:
- Can you fund it in kwacha?
- Is it Visa or Mastercard?
- Does it support recurring charges?
- Are fees shown before you top up?
EverTry is one option available in Malawi. You can fund it in Malawian kwacha (MWK), USDT/USDC, or Bitcoin. Cards are Visa or Mastercard and cost a US$4 one-time creation fee, with no monthly fee. For Netflix, use EverTry’s standard (reloadable) card, which needs ID verification. The no-KYC one-time card can’t be reloaded, so it doesn’t suit a monthly subscription.
Steps:
- Create a virtual dollar card in your provider’s app and fund it with at least one month’s Netflix price plus VAT.
- In Netflix, go to Account → Membership → Manage payment info → Credit or Debit Card.
- Enter the virtual card’s number, expiry date and CVV.
- Use the billing address shown in the card app.
- Confirm, and keep the card funded before each renewal date.
You can set up a virtual card in Malawi in a few minutes.
Good for: people whose bank card is declined or keeps hitting its limit. Watch out for: an empty card on renewal day. Top up a day or two before.
Why does Netflix decline my card in Malawi?
Most Netflix declines in Malawi happen because the card isn’t enabled for international or recurring payments, the forex limit is used up, or the billing details don’t match.
| What happens | Likely cause in Malawi | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined at sign-up | Online or international payments switched off | Ask your bank to enable them, then try again |
| Card accepted, then renewal fails | Recurring payments blocked, or forex limit reached | Ask your bank to allow recurring charges, or switch to a gift card or virtual card |
| Declined after it worked for months | The bank lowered its forex limit, or the card expired | Check your limit and the expiry date; update payment info |
| “Card can’t be used” style message | Card type or region not supported | Use a Visa/Mastercard with recurring billing |
| Declined after entering the OTP | 3D Secure timed out or failed | Retry and approve the prompt quickly |
| Declined with money in the account | Billing address doesn’t match the bank’s records | Enter the address exactly as the bank has it |
| Gift card code won’t redeem | Currency mismatch, already used, or a fake code | Check the currency matches your account (USD); ask the seller for a refund |
If Netflix shows an error code, search it on help.netflix.com. Netflix explains each code there.
Understanding your Netflix charges
Why does my statement say “NETFLIX.COM Amsterdam”?
Netflix bills Malawi accounts from its company in the Netherlands, so your statement may show NETFLIX.COM Amsterdam NL. That’s the real Netflix, not fraud.
Why was I charged twice?
Usually, you weren’t. Netflix first places a temporary hold (an authorization). The actual charge (the settlement) arrives a day or two later. Both lines can appear on your statement, but only one amount is taken.
Why is my bill higher than the plan price?
There are two common reasons:
- VAT: 17.5% Malawi VAT on digital services since 15 April 2026.
- Cross-border fee: because Netflix bills from outside the US, some card providers add a cross-border fee, even though the charge is in dollars. Check your card’s fee list.
How to keep Netflix from being cancelled
- Fund your card 1–2 days before your billing date. Find the date under Account → Membership.
- Update an expired card straight away in Manage payment info.
- Downgrade instead of cancelling if money is tight. The Mobile plan costs US$2.99 and keeps your profile and watch history.
- Keep a backup. If your bank card fails often, a gift card balance or a funded virtual card can keep your account running.
Final thoughts
Start with your Malawian bank card. If it’s enabled for online and recurring payments, it’s the simplest option. If it keeps failing, a Netflix gift card works without a card, and a virtual dollar card funded in kwacha (such as EverTry’s) keeps renewals automatic. Whichever you choose, budget for the 17.5% VAT.
